UDT PHOTOS

Some of the members of UDT-13 shoot the breeze on the way to the Drop Zone in Castillejos, Philippines. On the left in front is Pete Upton, behind him is Mole Roberts. On the right is ETC Burger, Nickles, Uberto, LCDR Wilson (skipper), and in front of him is PR1 Al Flud, admin type parachute rigger and Indian (the crazy drunken kind). The skipper used to let me jump freefall even though I had not yet attended military parachute training. Those days are gone.

Another example of Pete 'The Pirate' Carolan's artwork. The Team guys had their favorite hangout in Olongapo, Philippines. It was the Rainbow Club. Beer was about fifty cents and the women were fairly accommodating, especially when the fleet wasn't in. We took care of security so there were no fights in here and treated all the 'hostesses' with a degree of respect. Our favorite saying was "UDT no pay". We could live with that.

Here is one of the Filipino equivalents of a UDT man. One of our teammates got his Rolex stolen after he was knifed in a fight while trying to get another Filipino to stop beating up a girl. The UOU (Underwater Operations Unit) guys tracked him down, killed him, got Hosteter's Rolex back and delivered it to him while he was recovering in the Cubi Point Naval Hospital. The UOU guys were good guys, but you shouldn't piss them off. PR1 Al Flud and I went up to Camp Magsaysay and helped train these guys to make static line parachute jumps. We learned why this place was, and still is, considered a third world country. We also learned why there were very few fat Filipinos.
